Johnny Depp wanted to congratulate his friend Robert Downey Jr. for his Oscar win Sunday night, but it didn’t necessarily go as planned.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor initially took to his Instagram Story to celebrate the Oppenheimer star by sharing a photo of the pair together. However, it turned out it wasn’t a real photo of them but rather a photoshopped picture.
The real photograph taken in November 1988 featured Downey with his then-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker at a Young Artists Unite event in Los Angeles. But the photoshopped image replaced Parker with Depp and has actually circulated on social media and fan sites for years.

The Alice in Wonderland actor quickly deleted the photo and later shared another (real) photo of him with the Iron Man star at the Golden Globes in 2011. “Let’s try this again… congrats to my dear friend,” Depp wrote in the caption.
Downey took home the Oscar for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The win marked a high point in the actor’s career, which has included some ups and downs, such as being sentenced to prison in the late ’90s for drug charges.
But the actor made a comeback with his iconic role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, he reached a new triumph with his latest Academy Award win.
“I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris [Nolan] knew it. Emma [Thomas] made sure she surrounded me with one of the greatest casts and crew of all time,” Downey said during his acceptance speech on Sunday, as well as thanking his “entertainment lawyer, Tom Hansen, of 40 years. The half of which he’s spent trying to get me insured and bailing me out of the hoosegow, thanks bro!”
