It’s been a long time coming, delayed significantly over the last year because of pandemic-related closings, but we are about to finally get eyes on Black Widow. The movie is set to answer quite a few questions about Natasha Romanoff and her past, but also the titular character’s future as well. And Giant Freakin Robot has a massive scoop from one of our trusted sources about the Black Widow post-credits scene for the film and what it will mean for Black Widow moving forward.

This Black Widow post-credits scene looks like it’s going to set up some future conflicts for the next iteration of the character and possibly sets into motion how past events will most definitely contribute to different characters’ futures. In this scene, we will see Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Val), played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, instruct Yelena Belova to find Clint Barton and take him out. This planned hit and execution will be directly related to what we saw happen at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Prior to seeing this Black Widow post-credits scene, fans will know that Scarlet Johansson as Natasha met her end on Vormir when she and Hawkeye were there to retrieve the Soul Stone from Red Skull, the keeper. We’ve known that the only way to actually leave with the Stone is through the sacrifice of another life. Thanos chose a different option but Natasha and Clint actually spar for the chance to do it, neither wanting the other to lose their life. In the scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this was one of the very best scenes. Pitting two friends against each other with all their skills and tricks in an effort to make sure the other friend actually lived. It was heartbreaking in its construction and perfect in the execution.

Of course, we know that these two fought for the ability to effectively save the other, to make themselves the one who would plummet off the side of the mountain. It was actually Black Widow who bested Hawkeye in the match and chose her own fate. Clint fought until the end to hold on to her before she muttered, “Let me go…It’s okay,” releasing her grip and making sure Clint could leave with the Soul Stone.

Now, as we’ll see in the Black Widow post-credits scene, Val wouldn’t know that was the case, and it’s very clear that Clint is unlikely to have wanted to relive many of his last minutes with Black Widow. So when he returns with the Soul Stone, it’s clear Val will see this as him having been fully responsible for Black Widow’s death. And for that, she’s going to send Yelena to finish the job. The end credit’s scene sets up a definitive conflict between these two, something we could see in the upcoming Disney+ series which will star Clint Barton as he passes the Hawkeye mantle to Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop.

Florence Pugh as Yelena is the new Black Widow and we know she’s already set to have a role in that series. This Black Widow post-credits scene now points directly to at least one element of that series. These two are going to be pitted against each other. Will Clint be able to convince Yelena he isn’t responsible? It stands to reason that’s the way it goes, but this is Marvel we are talking about and this could also maybe spell the end for his character as well.

You’ll get to see this Black Widow post-credits scene on July 9th when the film finally hits theaters.
